Success Story -1

April 30, 2010

Vinod Gupta, aged 23 years, is a resident of Old Delhi. Coming from an economically poor background and being the only deaf in his family, Vinod could not pursue any formal education. He did his schooling till class II. Most of the time he stayed at home, and was not allowed to communicate in sign language or interact socially with his peers.

Vinod came to NDS in February 2008. With no educational background or other skills, he joined the Keyboarding and English Literacy class. He started interacting with other deaf students, which helped him to improve his signing skills and consequently he made a lot of friends. This developed his confidence and self esteem.

At NDS he also went through a pre-employment training for personality development and how to work along with hearing counterparts in a hearing work environment.

In May 2008, Maurya Sheraton, offered a training program in “Paint on the Wall”. Vinod participated with 6 other candidates. Being the only Class II pass out, this was not revealed to the prospective employers. However, Vinod was chosen due to his strong observations, quick learning capacity, commitment and hard work. When his actual qualification was told the employers of Maurya Sheraton were very surprised and marveled at Vinod’s determination to work.

Today Vinod works in the kitchen in the F&B department at Maurya Sheraton, New Delhi. He earns a salary of Rs.5000/- per month and is able to contribute to his family’s income. He has brought much honor to his family, who is today very proud of him and no longer consider him a burden.
